Number of traffic fatalities historically low last year

Most accidents were alcohol or drugs-related

Some 182 people were killed in traffic accidents in Denmark last year, reports DR.

It is one of the lowest figures since 1930 – the year when the police started collecting the data.

Fewer fatalities were recorded only in 2012 and 1941.

However, there are large differences among the regions.

While 20 people died on the roads of central and west Zealand, only 9 people were killed in traffic in south Zealand and Lolland-Falster.

Alcohol and speeding
Most of the accidents were caused by motorists driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication.

Many fatalities occurred on roads outside of towns, were drivers can go up to 80 km/h.

Although the number of traffic fatalities fell, more cyclists (31) died in traffic accidents last year compared to 2010, when cyclists made up only 10 percent of all traffic fatalities (26 people).
