Plans to scrap bus line come as a disappointment to municipality

After scrapping plans that proposed the construction of a light rail in Aalborg, the Transport Ministry has now informed the Jutland city’s municipality that it is cancelling the much cheaper alternative of a bus line.

Lack of responsibility
MP Rasmus Prehn received the news yesterday and is not happy.

“There is a lack of responsibility. It’s one thing that they will not support the construction of a light rail, but it is regrettable and annoying that they cannot support a bus line,” DR reported the Socialdemokraterne MP as saying.

Daniel Nyboe, the deputy mayor at Aalborg Municipality, expressed similar disappointment.

“It is unfortunate that we have to fight this. The government should change its mind. With a state-funded university and new super-hospital in the city [of Aalborg], we must also have proper public transport,” he said.

Tightening the purse strings
However, the transport minister, Hans Christian Schmidt, wrote in response that the previous government had scheduled far more projects than it could afford, and therefore it could not replace the light rail with a bus line.
