Today’s Date: Virgin chase ends

A seemingly unending international negotiation finally ended in 1917

Some 99 years ago today, Denmark signed a treaty to sell the Virgin Islands to the US.

The US secretary of state first expressed an interest in buying them in 1867, but it took a further five decades to agree on terms that were suitable for both parties and the inhabitants of the island.

Adjusted according to inflation, the islands cost the equivalent of 3.2 billion kroner.
