‘The Look of Silence’ and ‘Krigen’ both get nods

Denmark has defied the odds today to receive two Oscar nominations.

A nod for ‘The Look of Silence’ in the category of Best Documentary Feature was practically assured, but ‘Krigen’ (‘A War’) was expected to miss out on the final shortlist for Best Film in a Foreign Language.

Whereas ‘The Look of Silence’ could go close in its category, but will face stiff competition from ‘Amy’, Hungarian film ‘Son of Saul’ is an odds-on favourite to win Best Film in a Foreign Language.

Good year for Nordics
Elsewhere in the Nordics, Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson has received a nomination for his score for ‘Sicario’.

And Swedish actress Alicia Vikander – best known to Danish audiences for her lead role in ‘En kongelig affære’ (‘A Royal Affair’) – has been nominated for best supporting actress for her turn in ‘The Danish Girl’.

In total, ‘The Danish Girl’ – the story of Denmark’s Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of sex reassignment surgery – received four nominations (also actor, costume design and production design), but missed out in the Best Film category, for which only eight films were selected as opposed to the normal ten.
