In a bid to make it easier and more flexible for motorists to park in the city, the Danish capital is completely digitalising its car parking payment scheme over the next couple of months.
In the future, drivers won’t have to keep tabs on parking tickets – acquired via pay machines or mobile phone apps – but instead pay using their vehicle’s number-plate.
“With digital parking it will be easier to pay for parking in Copenhagen and we will have much better documentation,” said Morten Kabell, the deputy mayor for technical issues.
“Motorists will avoid the fines given out when tickets fall off their dashboard or when the car door slams shut or because some tickets have been mixed up. In future, these errors won’t happen because drivers can document that the payment is in the system.”

Looking at London
The new payment system means that about half of the city’s current parking ticket machines will by replaced by information stands that will help guide motorists on how to pay via their mobile phones.
The remaining half of the parking ticket machines will be refitted to still handle payments with cards and cash.
Kabell said he looked forward to having a parking payment system like the one they have in cities such as Amsterdam and London.
