At first glance, this might look like a new children’s film – a sequel to Happy Feet starring Ben Stiller. But it is, in fact, exactly what it says on the pilchard tin.

These are penguins – you know, the fluffy-looking, tuxedo-wearing animals that squeak. You get to meet them and you can bring the kids.

There are only four people allowed every time the zoo hosts this event, so you need to grab the opportunity as quickly as possible. And even if you miss out this time around, you can add your name to the waiting list.

Be warned: no children under the age of 12 are permitted as it is not believed they can entirely be trusted – which sounds a bit harsh, but might increase your chances of getting hooked up.

The experience includes helping the zookeeper to get the penguin’s food ready and then feeding those exact same penguins.

With no other visitors present, this is a unique opportunity to spend an hour in a zoo free of crowds and yelling families.

Observing the behind-the-scenes work of the keepers and learning more about the penguins is a joy you’ll not soon forget.

While the keepers’ stories will educate and amuse you, it is the close proximity with the animals that will stay with you long after the zoo’s gates are opened at 10 am and you quickly disappear from the waddling birds’ view into the visiting masses.
