Helle Thorning-Schmidt’s new position as head of the international charitable organisation Save the Children seems to have softened her stance on immigration issues.
Though her government sought to tighten Denmark’s asylum laws, Thorning-Schmidt now believes Europe has the capacity to accept a further 1 million refugees.
Not doing enough
During a recent interview at Fortune’s ‘The Most Powerful Women Summit’, Thorning-Schmidt claimed that some European countries were not taking in enough refugees.
“What we have to remind ourselves is that these people are fleeing the most terrible war we have ever seen – right in our backyard,” she said.
“Of course, Europe could take care of a million refugees. But right now what’s happening is that a few countries are taking all the refugees [when] all the European countries should be working together to shoulder the burden.”
