With a strong showing, Crown Prince Frederik became the first royal to complete an Ironman competition

Crown Prince Frederik made a bit of history today by becoming the first royal to complete a full ironman competition. It took Frederik ten hours, 45 minutes and 32 seconds to swim 3.8km, bike 180km and run a full 42.2km marathon. With that time, the crown prince was able to claim 20th in his class – 'Pro Men' – and number 707 overall.

Crown Princess Mary and the couple's two eldest children, Christian and Isabella, were on hand to cheer on Frederik and the other 2,600 competitors.

"My family and friends were of course there, but the Copenhageners and other Danes who were also there meant everything," Crown Prince Frederik told TV2 News. "They were an unbelievable support."

The KMD Ironman Copenhagen was won by Jens Petersen-Bach of Odense with a time of eight hours, 12 minutes and 41 seconds.

The contest had 800 international competitors representing over 40 countries. The course began with the swimming leg at Amager Strandpark before participants took a 180km bike ride through northern Zealand and finished with a full marathon along the harbour front in Copenhagen.
