Historic Danish hotel burns down

Svinkløv Badehotel has been a north-Jutland icon since 1925

The famous beach hotel Svinkløv Badehotel burned to the ground overnight after a fire broke out in its basement just before 01:00.

Fire technicians are currently investigating possible reasons for the fire at the historic hotel, which is located in Fjerritslev in north Jutland.

“It’s a cultural pearl and it’s simply so tragic,” Poul Badsberg, the duty officer at North Jutland Police, told Metroxpress newspaper.

The police were notified of the fire at 00:48, and by 02:30 the fire had spread to the extent that it burned through the roof.

The approximately 70 guests staying at the hotel were all evacuated safely.

Svinkløv Badehotel, which was Denmark’s third largest wooden building, was established back in 1925 by the Danish-American businessman Carl Brix Kronborg.

It has been run by Louise and Kenneth Toft-Hansen since 2015.
