Today’s Date: What we always knew

A decade ago today, the DBU national football association and TV2 confirmed what all Danes already knew: that Michael Laudrup is Denmark’s best ever football player.

Laudrup made his debut for the national football team on his 18th birthday in 1982, and he scored 37 goals in 104 appearances.

He grabbed the world’s attention at the 1986 World Cup, scoring one of its best goals in Denmark’s 6-1 rout of Norway, but a falling-out with the management led to him not appearing in Denmark’s unlikely triumph at Euro 1992.

He returned though, and from November 1994 he captained Denmark for a total of 28 matches, including  their victory at the 1995 Confederations Cup.

After forming a formidable attack alongside his brother Brian at the 1998 World Cup, eventually bowing out in the quarter-finals to eventual finalists Brazil, he retired from football.
