Esbjerg secures big win in Belgium

An injury-time winner saw Esbjerg stun a Belgian team that hadn’t dropped a point, nor conceded at home, all season

Esbjerg continued their sensational run in European football by beating Belgian giants Standard Liege 2-1 away in the Europa League last night.

Dutch striker Mick Van Buren opened the scoring for the Danish outfit just after the hour with a powerful header, before the Belgians, who have won all of their seven games in the league this season, equalised ten minutes later through Geoffrey Mujangi Bia.

Esbjerg fended off a subsequent Standard Liege onslaught and secured the three points in dramatic fashion when new signing Mushaga Bakenga scored the winner in injury time.

Good week for Danish football
Midfielder Jakob Ankersen was pleased that his team managed to withstand the heavy pressure from Standard Liege and win the spoils.

“I am happy with the three points and I think we fought well,” Ankersen told Bold.dk. “We had a period in the second half when we were under massive pressure, but I think we managed to hold on to the ball, play intelligently and use one of our strongest weapons, the counter attack, at the end.”

The win sees Esbjerg sit at the top of Group C alongside Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg, which spanked Swedish team Elfborg 4-0 at home.

Esbjerg’s triumph follows their shocking qualification win over St Etienne of France and ended a superb week of European football for the Danish teams after FC Copenhagen drew 1-1 with Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday.
