Cash allocated to combat steroid use in fitness centres

The Culture Ministry is giving Anti Doping Denmark a nearly one million kroner grant to help it combat the growing use of steroids and growth hormones in the nation's gyms and fitness centres.

Steroid use is rampant in some centres, with Danes as young as 14 reportedly shooting themselves up in pursuit of the perfect body.

The culture minister, Marianne Jelved (Radikale), said that the money will be used to step up co-operation and prevention at fitness centres by establishing dialogues with young people to discourage them from using performance-enhancing drugs. Fitness centres have been required since 2008 to co-operate with Anti Doping Denmark.
