Retail sales continue to rise in January

Items other than groceries and clothing responsible for the increase

Retail sales figures rose from December to January by 0.2 percent, according to figures from the national statistics office Danmarks Statistik. This represents a 2.4 percent increase on the figure for January 2014 and brings the cumulative total increase since November up to 0.9 percent.

The increase can be attributed to sales growth in the category ‘other consumables’, which encompasses all products other than groceries and clothing, including consumer electronics, household appliances, and petrol. Sales in the groceries category fell by 0.3 percent and clothing sales were down by 0.7 percent.

The figures are based on turnover data supplied by Danish retailers. This means that internet sales from Danish webshops are included but internet purchases from abroad are not.
