This day marks the secession of Iceland from Denmark in 1944, when Iceland formally became an independent republic through a referendum that took place whilst Denmark was under German occupation. The relationship between the two countries has continued to be close, although these days, Danish is no longer taught as the country’s second language and only available to learn from the seventh grade.
