So, we’re wading into the awards season again, and while HBO’s True Detective was criminally overlooked by the Hollywood foreign press, Kevin Spacey can finally add a Golden Globe to his cabinet for portraying Frank Underwood in Netflix’s House Of Cards. Other highlights were Boyhood’s well-deserved hat-trick of Best Film (Drama), Best Supporting Actress and Best Director, and George Clooney saying something nice to his wife.
As for the general releases this week, we’re fortunate (or perhaps not) to have an early look (before most of the planet) at Michael Mann’s Blackhat – a pan-Pacific cyber thriller starring Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Rush). Meanwhile, a computer-generated Paddington bear rides in on much UK fanfare and surprisingly favourable reviews. Camp X-Ray, starring twinkly Kirsten Stewart, was a Sundance hit that later received lukewarm press, while another Twilighter, Taylor Lautner, is also back on our screens this week with Tracers. It’s an intriguing actioner featuring the former wolfboy as a cycle courier turned parkour enthusiast who steals jewels for extra cash … My recommendation for the week, however, is Moneyball director Bennet Miller’s latest sporting drama, Foxcatcher – reviewed this week.
Over at Cinemateket there’s a selection of Jonathan Glazer’s films, shorts and music videos and a retrospective for Pawel Pawlowski who is currently wowing cinephiles with his universally acclaimed masterpiece Ida. Also worth a look is the ‘Ønskefilm’ program which is curated by public votes and this weekend features such works as Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange (Saturday 21:15) and Terence Malick’s Tree of Life (Saturday 14:00) – both of which more than qualify a trip to the big screen.
‘Danish on a Sunday’ is the Cinemateket’s bi-monthly screening of Danish films with English subs. This weekend Nils Malmros’ autobiographical Sorrow & Joy sees film director Johannes return home to find his wife has killed their nine-month-old daughter. Divisive and unsettling, the film starts at 14:15 and an extra 40kr will get you coffee and a pastry.
