Record number of university applicants

More aspiring students than ever, but not all them will be offered the course of their dreams

A record 91,231 have applied to go to university this year, beating last year’s record of 88,040 applicants, DR reports.

The aspiring students had until Saturday at noon to apply for a course of study, if they were applying according to the so-called quota 1 system, which sees universities accepting students based on their grades.

The deadline for applying via quota 2 (in which the university assesses the individual applicants’ qualifications) was on 15 March. Some 49,300 had submitted an application before that date, according to the Education Ministry.

Will wait three weeks
All the applicants will know on 30 July whether or not they have been accepted to university.

The number of university applicants is rising every year, which means that not all of them will be offered a place on the course they have dreamed of. Last year, only 63,525 of all applicants were accepted to university.

Business popular
The business academies in particular have been extremely popular this year. Combined they have seen a rise of 13 percent more applicants compared to last year. Some 14,063 applied to a business academy as their first choice.
