Ariël Jacobs joins just one month after taking Anderlecht to the title

FC Copenhagen has confirmed that its new coach is Ariël Jacobs. The Belgian in May decided not to renew his contract at Anderlecht, where he had spent four and a half years, winning the Belgian Jupiler Pro League title twice – mostly recently this year.

The 58-year-old has signed a two-year deal and replaces Carsten V Jensen, who it emerged was only a caretaker coach after the Lions failed to win the Superliga in May. Jensen, who took over from Roland Nilsson last winter, will return to his original position of sporting director.

Jacobs, who made his name winning the Belgian Cup with La Louvière in 2003, took over at Anderlecht in 2008, guiding the club to five top-three places in succession, finishing second in 2008 and 2009, first in 2010, third in 2011, and first in 2012.

While his experience in the Champions League is limited to the qualifying rounds, he has twice taken his team to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, and in last year’s competition, Anderlecht won all six of its group games before losing to AZ Alkmaar in the round of 32.
