Dane facing death penalty in Indonesia

The embassy is providing consular assistance, according to the Foreign Ministry

A Danish man faces the death penalty in Indonesia after being arrested for attempting to smuggle 1.48 kilos of methamphetamines into the country.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed that the man, 56, was arrested at the airport in Jakarta on June 8, after which he was imprisoned.

“It is correct that a Danish citizen is in prison in Jakarta,” the Foreign Ministry’s citizen service told Ekstra Bladet newspaper.

“The embassy is providing consular assistance and has visited the imprisoned man, who is receiving legal counsel.”

Tough on drugs
Indonesia has some of the world’s most stringent laws on drugs. Traffickers can face the death penalty for being in possession of just five grams of drugs.

According to a Malaysian newspaper, the New Straits Times, foreigners are regularly arrested attempting to smuggle drugs into Indonesia and a number of them are currently on the Indonesian death row.
