Copenhagen chosen as one of the hosts of the Euro 2020 football championship

The capital will host three group games and a last-16 match

Denmark’s capital will be among the cities hosting football’s European Championship in 2020 after UEFA revealed its final 13 host cities today in Geneva.

The decision means that Parken Stadium in Copenhagen will host three Euro 2020 group stage games and a last-16 match.

“It’s fantastic for Danish football, for Copenhagen and for all football-fans in Denmark,” Jesper Møller, the chairman of the Danish football association, the DBU, said in a press release.

“We are proud that UEFA trusts us to co-host one of the world’s greatest sports events and we look forward to showing our best to the whole of Europe.”

With a capacity of 38,000, Parken Stadium failed to live up to UEFA’s minimum capacity demand of 50,000, but the European football association announced that it would grant dispensation to two applicants.

Stockholm left disappointed
Twelve other European cities have been awarded hosting responsibilities.

London will host the final and the two semi-finals, while Baku, Munich, St Petersburg and Rome will all host a quarter-final match.

Amsterdam, Dublin, Glasgow, Budapest, Brussels, Bucharest and Bilbao will, like Copenhagen, host three group games and a last-16 match.

The six cities to miss out on a chance to host the tournament were Cardiff, Jerusalem, Stockholm, Minsk, Skopje and Sofia.

Initially, 32 member associations had expressed an interest in co-hosting the 24-team tournament back in September 2013, but that list was whittled down to the 19 who were in contention for the final 13 spots today.
