Dane suspected of terrorism held in Lebanese prison

According to Berlingske newspaper, a 19-year-old Danish man suspected of being part of the Islamic State (IS) network has been in prison in Lebanon since June.

The young man is reportedly incarcerated in the Roumieh Prison located just north of Beirut and has been visited by Danish authorities on a number of occasions.

”We can confirm that a Danish citizen has been held in prison since June,” Ole Egberg Mikkelsen, the head of the citizen services Borgerservice, told Berlingske.

”We have provided standard consular assistance as usual and arranged contact with his family and prison visits.”

Family connections
The man, who was born in Denmark to Lebanese parents, allegedly lost two members of his family in 2013 after they died fighting on behalf of the Islamic militant organisation Jund al-Islam.

The Lebanese authorities claim the Dane has been active as part of IS in Lebanon and Syria and has been in the region for a long period of time.

The Danish intelligence agency PET has yet to comment on the situation.
