How the whole city celebrated UN Day

Last week on Friday was UN Day, a time for celebrations across the city.

UN City was understandably one of the places to be. It looks like the Weekly Post’s UN supplement went down well with the locals

Among the dignitaries present were Mogens Lykketoft, the chairperson of parliament …

and Christian Friis Bach (reading, left), a former Radikale minister, who was also interested in the supplement – with good reason as these days, Bach is the executive secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe

Also celebrating UN Day were the children and staff at Rygaards School, where over 60 different countries were represented by those in attendance. (In our day, that used to be quite rude!)

Many spent the day in national dress (which in some cases included Bayern Munich football shirts!),

Lunchtime consisted of a huge buffet for 1,000 people made up of numerous dishes from around the world.  All the leftovers from the lunch were given to the Mother Teresa Soup Kitchen for the homeless in Copenhagen.

“The children learnt about the work of the UN,” explained the school. “They learnt that among many other things it fights for the right every child to go to school and to have their basic needs of food, water and shelter met.”

Copenhagen International School (remaining photos: Maja Giannoccaro) also got in the act as 840 students representing 70 nations along with 180 staff made it a day to remember at the Hellerup school.

The day included lots of UN-related themes in the classroom …

an international lunch with food from all over the world …

and a UN assembly with a flag parade, speakers and entertainment
