On this day a decade ago in 2005, Helle Thorning-Schmidt was elected the head of the Socialdemokraterne party. Thorning-Schmidt – who later became, and remains, Denmark’s prime minister – won the party leadership election with 53 percent of the vote ahead of current Copenhagen mayor Frank Jensen.
