CPH PIX film review: ‘The Wonders’

Wondrous effort from Family Rohrwacher

Following on from her star turn in Sworn Virgin, Alba Rohrwacher features again, this time among an ensemble cast that includes Monica Belluci.

Directed by her sister Alice Rohrwacher, this is a beautifully observed study of a bee-keeping family who produce honey in the Italian countryside.

Gelsomino is the eldest of four sisters and enjoys a close relationship with her father who has built a careful structure around their lives in order to keep his family and his business protected against outside influences.

As Gelsomina comes of age, she starts to feel these restrictions ever more strongly and soon it falls to her to challenge them. The Wonders deservedly took the Grand Prize in Cannes last year. It is a joyful, Fellini-esque circus of humanity that is frequently hilarious and touching.
