Drinking less but smoking more

According to a new study carried out by the National Institute of Public Health, Danish teenagers drink less alcohol than they used to eight years ago.

The percentage of high school students (attending gymnasium) who drink every weekend fell from 59 percent in 1996 to 46 percent in 2014.

While high school girls drink an average of 9.2 units per week, boys consume 12.9.

Consumption too high
Despite the decrease, the average consumption is still well above the 5 units recommended as a limit for youths by the Health and Medicines Authority.
Researchers also found some 34 percent of high school students smoke cigarettes, while in 1996 it was only 21 percent. Those who smoke regularly light up an average of 9.2 cigarettes per day.

A total of 75,096 young people aged 15-19 years old were interviewed for the survey, both from high schools (gymnasier) and vocational schools (erhvervsskoler). (LR)
