Today’s date: Gold coast handover

A murky anniversary from Denmark’s slaving past

On this day back in 1850, Denmark handed over all its fortifications and property rights on the Gold Coast in Africa to the British.

From 1674 to 1755 the Danish Gold Coast was administered by the Danish West India-Guinea Company, and in 1750 it became a Danish colony.

It was also under British occupation from 1782-85.
