Uber drivers fined for operating unlicenced taxis at Copenhagen court

Appeal against landmark decision likely according to defence counsel

Six Uber drivers have today been fined between 2,000 and 6,000 kroner each at the City Court in Copenhagen – a landmark ruling that will no doubt make the city’s taxi drivers rejoice.

The six drivers claimed they were car-pooling, but the court disagreed, ruling they were illegally offering a taxi service without the correct licence.

Appeal likely
Before the decision, the drivers’ defence counsel had indicated they would appeal against the decision, and Uber itself has always promised it would back its drivers in such cases.

Uber maintains that its drivers car-pool using the system UberPOP, which was withdrawn from Sweden in May after a number of similar cases – and also from Germany last year.
