Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
These guys are on fire − for their last show, tickets sold out within 17 minutes of going on sale. As such, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds have added another show in Copenhagen, giving you a second opportunity to see this Australian alt-rock group in the fall. Nick Cave has been the frontman since the group’s emergence in 1983, and he has ensured that they have maintained a very distinctive post-punk alternative sound. A prolific band, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds released their 15th album, Push the Sky Away, in mid-February, and it was highly lauded by music critics everywhere. The UK’s NME.com called Cave “the grand lord of gothic lushness”, and the album certainly has dark undertones in its tracks. Don’t miss out on this second chance! Bruno Mars
This is another show you should get your hands on as soon as possible! Seemingly overnight, Bruno Mars has gone from being incessantly mocked for his hyperbolic love song ‘Grenade’ to being loved thanks to pop-tastic tunes reminiscent of the Jackson Five. Forum Copenhagen is jumping on the bandwagon, having added the young Hawaiian to its line-up on October 31. This past December, Mars released his newest album, Unorthodox Jukebox, and it has skyrocketed his career, helping him amass an impressive plethora of awards and singles, including the toe-tapping favourite ‘Locked Out of Heaven’. With this newest album, Mars has also chosen to not stick with one genre and instead experiments with the piano-carried ballad ‘When I Was Your Man’, the disco fever blast-from-the-past ‘Treasure’, and the reggae-infused ‘Show Me’. The Raveonettes
There’s no place like home for The Raveonettes, a Danish indie-rock duo who are starting their big spring Nordic tour in Copenhagen. Evoking a simple West Coast sound is what Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo are all about, and their songs are carried through with wistful harmonies. Their latest album, Observator, was released this past September, and it is one part surf and one part edge. The songs’ simplicity is juxtaposed with a poignant electric guitar and paced beats that get you moving from side-to-side. Although the two have been playing music for over a decade, their music sounds as fresh as ever. Their opening band, the Danish trio So-So Echo, were hand-picked by The Raveonettes. Kaizers Orchestra
If you’re looking for something a bit more left-of-centre, you want to see Kaizers Orchestra. Most groups coming out of Norway gain popularity by playing black metal, but these guys are one of the first Norwegian groups to sing in their native language and play a more unorthodox, unpredictable style of music. Kaizers Orchestra have a distinctive sound, using oil barrels, train whistles and triangles as integral instruments. The Norwegians have frequently performed away-from-home in Denmark. They performed at Roskilde in 2011 to a sold-out audience, and are regarded as one of the best live acts in all of Europe. A lively stage presence and an upbeat, bizarre sound are sure to make the energy coming from them at Store Vega palpable. The show is on March 10, and tickets are 270kr on billetlugen.dk.
Shrek − The Musical
Shrek the Musical has the perfect level of comedy and entertainment for the entire family to enjoy. Based on the new classic DreamWorks fairytale parody Shrek, this musical has been running for over five years now, starting with New York’s Broadway and making its way to London’s West End. The show has made its musical rights available for independent overseas theatres, giving them creative liberties otherwise unavailable to shows of this magnitude. Now, Forum Copenhagen will be running this family-friendly musical through April. A cast of more than 30 talented actors and a ten-man band will take you through the story of the lovable ogre and his sidekick, Donkey. Showings start on April 5 and run until April 30.
