We visit four shops with designs on your custom and design in their blood. 

DANSK Made for Rooms – Dansk stocks work by individual designers and small label bands, based both in Denmark and abroad. Current household pieces include the Cornet clip-on lamp (995kr) from the French interior design company Tsé Tsé, powder-coated steel storage boxes (1,995kr) in a range of bright colours by designer Henriette Leth, and individual, handmade porcelain vases (300-650kr) by ceramicist Thora Finnsdottir. Regular rotations in the shop’s collection have included bamboo benches and bookcases, children’s furniture and ceramic owls.

DZOO – Designer Zoo is a working design store, housing eight designers. Products like furniture, glass objects, jewellery and knitwear are both produced and sold on site. Karsten Lauritsen, a furniture designer, created the concept of the shop, which focuses solely on Danish design. Particularly popular are the shop’s ‘bean tables’ – a set of three tables that come in an array of colours. They are sized to fit nicely under each other with surfaces shaped like kidney beans. Other products include glass candleholders,  decorative pillows, and sleek and colorful handmade ceramics.

Stil og Stemning – Located on a side street off Gammel Kongevej for over ten years, the wares displayed here are primarily old and Danish. The furniture, baskets, bed covers and ceramics have all been carefully chosen with an eye towards simplicity and the colour white. Some of the linens have classic gentle floral patterns, but light shades dominate and each item here seems perfectly suited to a life in candlelight.

Ichinen – Initially the shop carried clothing and a range of furniture designed by owner Tom Rossau, an entirely self-taught designer, but gradually lighting became his speciality and the shop reflects that. He works mainly with natural wood veneers and is entirely honest about his work. “The design process is actually quite selfish. It may be that in the end the consumer gets their needs covered, but in all honesty I do it for the kick that it gives me,” he says.
