Fire at city power plant expected to burn for days

A silo containing wooden pellets has caught fire at Amagerværket power plant

UPDATE, 21:30: Copenhagen police say that it will take fire fighters several days to fully put out the fire at Amagerværket power plant. Fire fighters are working on removing the wood pellets in the power plant's silos, but it is still uncertain just how long that process will take. Police Commissioner Allan Wadsworth-Hansen stressed to DR News, however, that there is no danger to nearby residents of the plant.

ORIGINAL, 13:05: A fire has broken out at the Amagerværket power plant in Copenhagen.

The fire was first discovered at 8am after smoke was seen rising from the silo that stores the wooden pellets the plant uses for fuel.

Fire fighters are now trying to bring down the temperature of the fire though this may take several days.

“Our experience is that it can take a long time to fix it,” a police spokesperson told the tabloid Ekstra Bladet. “It’s a warehouse full of wood pellets and, according to the latest reports, flames have been seen, which means it is actually getting worse.”

The fire brigade and the home guard have also evacuated part of the facility near the fire.

Three workers were injured by an explosion in a silo at the Amager power plant in May.
