Catch the classic sounds of summer at the castle

If you would like to be at the cutting edge of current developments in classical chamber music, then check out Copenhagen Summer Festival. The festival, which has taken place since 1969, is focused on presenting classical chamber music from upcoming talents – in other words, the musicians of tomorrow. Over time, it has become one of Denmark’s most important chamber music festivals, where many of today’s leading musicians have been showcased and promoted.

The events take place in the concert hall at Charlottenborg Palace, originally a residence for King Frederick III’s illegitimate son Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve. Since 1754, however, it has served as the home of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and several other art institutions. The intimate concert hall only holds 200 people and usually fills up quickly, so book in advance if you want to be sure of a ticket.

Trio Vivo
This trio, consisting of Emil Gryesten (piano), Benedikte Damgaard (violin) and Johan Krarup (cello), is bubbling with talent. Damgaard studies at the Royal Danish Music Conservatory, Gryesten is an international prize winner and Krarup plays with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. They will play Beethoven and Brahms.

Opening Act: Andrey Baranov Piano Trio
Russian violinist Andrey Baranov won first prize in the Queen Elizabeth Competition in 2012. This concert is his first in Denmark, where he will open the festival with his trio, consisting of Miki Aoki on the piano and Alexey Zhilin on cello.

A new young string quartet consisting of Kirstine Schneider and Erik Danciu on violin, Sigrid Kongshøj on bratsch and Constance Weber on cello. The programme offers music by Haydn and Sjostakonitch. Admission is free.

Russian musician Olga Volkova was the winner of the Carl Nielsen Competition 2012, and is a shining violin talent on her way to an international star career. She has performed as a soloist worldwide, and returns this year to Copenhagen Summer Festival.

Trio Boyarsky & Henrik Goldschmidt
This lovely string trio, made up of Konstantin Boyarsky, Benjamin Baker and Amelia Jakobsson-Boyarsky, have joined forces with oboist Henrik Goldschmidt to perform a varied programme with music by Mozart, Beethoven, Britten and Goldschmidt.

Two of the most talented young graduates from the Opera Academy, already engaged at international opera houses, will perform a vocal programme accompanied by pianist Kristoffer Hyldig.
