Summer is gone, and the chill of winter is on the horizon. Autumn is here and the city is getting ready to celebrate the season. During the Danish autumn break in mid-October, museums and exhibition venues in and around Copenhagen offer lots of special activities for the entire family. Here are four examples of experiences where you can combine history, creativity, fresh food and open air.
Creative workshop for children
The National Gallery of Denmark is also a gallery for children. Get inspired with clay, paper, cloth, paint, pencils, glue guns and paint brushes. Create your own works of art in the workshop at the National Gallery of Denmark. Artists are on hand to instruct and assist.

Historical market
North of Copenhagen you will find one of the oldest and largest open air museums in the world. It contains over 50 farms, houses, smallholdings and mills from the period 1650-1940. It also features more than 20 historical gardens, unique landscapes and old Danish breeds of livestock. In October the Open Air Museum presents its historical market, where people gather to buy, sell and be happy. The market is a representation of the markets from the 1800s. There will be music, street art, cakes and fresh food.

A matter of life and death
Peep into the fascinating machine of life, when the Danish Museum of Hunting and Forestry uses the autumn’s leave to demonstrate the construction of a ruminant’s body. Two times a day from Monday 14 to Thursday 17 October, the museum dissects a specimen of one of the four deer species found in Denmark: red, fallow, roe and the recently introduced sika deer. The dissections take place outdoors in the garden’s amphitheatre at 11am and 1pm.

Night of Culture at the National Museum
The autumn break in Copenhagen kicks off with the Night of Culture on October 11. This night the National Museum offers activities for both children and adults. You can experience a lively and different evening with music, food, workshops and entertainment. The evening encourages absorption and meditative tranquility, but it also provides thrills and offers experiences relating to cultural heritage. At the main entrance, the museum’s restaurant serves refreshments to keep you warm.
