Danish Greenpeace activist released on bail

Anne Mie Roer Jensen joins other activists freed over the past few days.

Anne Mie Roer Jensen, the Danish member of the Arctic 30, the Greenpeace activists who have been held in a Russian prison since September, has been released on bail by the authorities in St Petersburg.

Jensen appeared before the court with pieces of cloth spelling out “Save the Arctic” sewed to the back of her shirt.

Thus far, 15 activists have been released on bail by the Russians, with seven other cases scheduled to be heard later today.

Greenpeace has guaranteed it will pay the bail for its activists.

The Russian government has held the Arctic 30 since their failed September 19 attempt to board a Gazprom oil rig in the Arctic Ocean. According to Greenpeace, Jensen and her fellow activists were initially charged with piracy by the Russians. If convicted of that charge, she faces up to 15 years in prison. The activists then had their charge changed to hooliganism, which carries a seven year sentence, though Greenpeace says they face both charges. Russian authorities have never officially confirmed the pending charges.
