Rape trial gets underway in India

Two out of the seven suspects in gang-rape of Danish tourist are underage

Five of the suspects who have been arrested in connection with the gang-rape and robbery of a 51-year-old Danish woman in New Dehli last week are expected to stand trial today.

Seven people have been arrested so far in the case, while one suspect still remains at large. Two out of the seven suspects already detained are underage, aged 12 and 17.

The 51-year-old Danish woman was gang raped by eight to nine men on Tuesday of last week near the New Dehli railway station after she got lost and asked a man for directions.

The man led her to a small garden close to the train station where she was abused for over three hours.

Evidence found with suspects
The suspects also robbed the woman and the police found some of the her personal effects at the homes of the arrested suspects, according to the Times of India newspaper. These items included books, a spectacle case and a mobile phone.

The Danish woman left India the day after the crime was committed and refused to be medically examined in India before returning home. The Indian authorities have arranged for a video conference so that the woman can partake in the trial from Denmark.

DNA evidence has been secured in the case after the woman left the clothes she was wearing during the crime in India, including a pair of trousers that belonged to one of the suspects which has clear traces of semen.

All of the suspects have been described by the Indian press and police as “vagabonds and drug-addicts”.

The trial is expected to last 20 days.
