People who feel different from their biological gender will soon be able to get a sex change without having to go through surgery or get a medical diagnosis, the Justice Ministry announced today in a press release.
Current legislation only allows transgendered people to switch after a physical sex change procedure, but the government's proposal means that anyone can apply if they feel they belong to the opposite sex.
After a six-month reflection period the applicant will have to make the final decision if he or she stands by the sex change.
Living the life they want
The proposal will ensure the right for all, no matter of their sexual orientation, to live the life they want, explained the equality minister, Manu Sareen (R).
"It's both a victory for transgendered people and for personal freedom in general," he said. "Of course we should allow legal sex changes in Denmark without making such a pervasive demand like castration."
The new sex change legislation must go through parliamentary hearing before it can be passed.
