Copenhagen Jazz Festival: Joshua Redman

Jazz by the sea

Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artistes to have emerged in the decade of the 1990s.

Born in Berkeley, California, he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff.

He was exposed at an early age to a variety of music and began playing clarinet at age nine before switching to what became his primary instrument, the tenor saxophone, one year later.

Redman quickly began jamming and gigging regularly with some of the leading jazz musicians of his generation.

To date he has been nominated for two Grammys and has garnered top honours from critics and readers polls of DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone.

Joshua Redman has been one of the key pioneering saxophonists over the last 20 years.

Together with his quartet, he each time embarks on a new adventure. He is a gifted performer and inventive saxophonist, and the quartet provides excellent accompaniment.

Drummer Gregory Hutchinson has the knack of starting a solo unobtrusively and transforming it into an explosive rhythmic blend.

Reuben Rogers anchors the music with his deep tone featuring echoes of gospel. Pianist Aaron Goldberg devises sparkling lines, and entices Redman with his ingenious harmonies.

On stage Redman is a true performer, where he sounds more unpolished, pricklier, as well as more agreeable.

He loves performing, since jazz is above all improvised music. This is when he changes into a compelling story teller, and identifies the perfect tempo for the concert.
