Denmark sends 11 million kroner to Gaza victims

NGOs report that civilians desperately need drinking water, medicine and protection

Denmark will send 11 million kroner in aid to ensure drinking water, medical treatment and protection for civilians in the Gaza Strip where Israeli attacks have killed at least 258 Palestinians – three quarters of them civilians. An additional 1,600 people have been injured in air raids and ground attacks and 1,600 homes have been destroyed. 

Spiral of violence
Development Minister Mogens Jensen said that Denmark's aid was the right thing to do.

"The spiral of violence between Gaza and Israel has unbearable consequences for completely innocent people," he told media.

"Nearly half of the population in Gaza lacks water and hospitals and humanitarian organisations need medicine to treat the injured and save lives. I find it crucial and right that Denmark assists in the acute humanitarian effort in Gaza."

The money will also go to strengthening and protecting humanitarian legislation and to ensuring access for aid workers. 

Denmark's aid will be equally distributed between the International Red Cross and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund in Palestine. As the UN is running low on resources, it has called on the international community for assistance.
