Cool for kids at the cinema

Shaun the Sheep

With Children’s Half-Term approaching, mums and dads can choose from three family features illuminating oceans of cherubic faces this weekend (remember to check it isn’t dubbed at kino.dk).

The Night At The Museum franchise trundles on with its third entry, Secret Of The Tomb – there’s little improvement overall, but Ben Stiller and Ricky Gervais will no doubt be giggling all the way to the bank. The film is notable for Robin Williams’ final on-screen appearance.

The Spongebob Movie is a big screen incarnation of the ’90s small screen sensation Spongebob Squarepants.

And finally, there’s another upscaling of a small screen property, this time from British animation powerhouse Aardman, the creators of Wallace & Gromit. Shaun The Sheep Movie sees the titular character take a day off from life on the farm and head to the big city.

Also on general release is Jupiter Ascending – the latest sci-fi offering from the Wachowski siblings. It’s a clear bid to reinvigorate both their post-Matrix reputation and box-office takings. See our verdict in this issue.

Cinemateket continues its season of Holocaust-themed films and its retrospective season of Pawel Pawlikowski’s works. Pawlikowski’s fish-out-of-water drama The Last Resort features a brilliant turn by Paddy Considine as a lonely Englishman who befriends a Russian immigrant and her son. It plays this Thursday (5th) at 18:45 – and it’s highly recommended.

This week started with Lars Von Trier making a rare appearance at the Roberts (Danish Oscars) and subsequently cleaning up in several categories with his director’s cut of Nymphomaniac, which Cinemateket is screening on Saturday at 14:00.

And then a day later, as part of its ‘Danish on a Sunday’ (a bi-monthly screening of Danish films for English speakers), it is showing the director’s death row musical Dancer In The Dark, which stars Bjork as a factory worker who is fast losing her eyesight and trying to secure enough money so that her son won’t suffer the same fate. As always, the film starts at 14:15 and an extra 40kr will get you coffee and a pastry. For a full Cinemateket program visit dfi.dk/Filmhuset.
