Early-April music: Put your hands together for Kwabs

Soundvenue session: Kwabs

Of Ghanaian descent, Kwabena Sarkodee Adjepong – better known by his stage-name Kwabs – is a soul and R ‘n’ B singer based in London.

Having sprung on to the international pop scene following the overwhelming popularity of his internet-hit ‘Walk’ – later released on his debut EP by the same name – Kwabs has become something of a modern British pop icon almost overnight.

Having been the lead vocalist for England’s National Youth Jazz Orchestra and studying at London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Music, Kwabs has taken the professional music career route for the bulk of his early years. Following graduation he landed himself in the media spotlight when he appeared on the 2011 reality TV series Goldie’s Band.

Having made some noise in the process, it was the internet that was Kwabs’ making.

In the space of just three years, Kwabs has gone from posting pop covers – among the most popular included Corrine Bailey Rae’s ‘Like a Star’ and James Blake’s ‘Wilhelm Scream’ – to landing himself a transatlantic record deal.

Low and behold, Kwabs has now ingratiated himself into the British pop scene with a few records along the way – his debut single release had over 25 million listens on Spotify alone – and becoming a beacon of hope for similarly determined YouTube stars.
