Capital’s health supremo to look into banning body-shaming ads in the city

Move inspired by newly-elected London Mayor Sadiq Khan

Copenhagen’s deputy mayor for health, Ninna Thomsen, in a move inspired by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, has vowed to look into the possibility of banning all body-shaming advertisements in Copenhagen.

The ‘progressive measure’ that Khan has vowed to implement can serve as a source of inspiration for Copenhagen’s own leadership, feels Thomsen.

Room for diversity
The deputy mayor, who will look into guidelines for advertisements displayed in Copenhagen, stresses there is a need to represent a diverse range of bodies in the media.

“There must be room to show the diversity of bodies that we find among Danes and in Copenhagen. But I think that when we have a fashion industry that only shows very skinny models, we have an obligation to address that,” she told DR.

Thomsen declined to get into specifics, but did say that guidelines would be open for negotiation.
