  • Record numbers of older people continue to work beyond retirement age

A new analysis from business organization SME Denmark shows that thousands of Danes over the state pension age are increasingly choosing to stay in the labor market. It can be linked to the fact that Folketinget removed the offset of earned income from the state pension from January 1, 2023. This has made it much […]

  • Two Danes advance in Wimbledon – tough opponents ahead

Thursday was a joyous day for Denmark in the traditional Wimbledon tennis tournament.

After more than 4.5 hours of play, world number 200 August Holmgren surprisingly defeated Czech Tomas Machac 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5 and 7-6.

Along the way, Holmgren survived three Czech match points. The 27-year-old Dane has never qualified for a Grand Slam tournament before.

The money he earns at Wimbledon corresponds to the total amount of prize money earned so far in his career.

“No matter what the situation is, I must play my game in the big moments. I can sometimes look like a huge idiot, like when I made three double faults in the tiebreak in the second set, and then I can look like a huge winner here at the end, where I made a backhand on the line,” Holmgren told DR upon the surprising victory.

In the third round, the 11th seeded Alex de Minaur awaits. That’s where the adventures end, right?

“I don’t see why it should stop here,” says Holmgren with a grin.

More expected is that Denmark’s strongest female tennis player has advanced to the third round.

Clara Tauson (22nd in the world) beat Russian Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 7-6 after a convincing performance. Tauson has never been this far in Wimbledon before, as she is not a big fan of playing on the grass.

In the third round, the former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina awaits. A tough opponent for Tauson, who, however, after two victories, has great faith in her own abilities.

“I would have been happier to be in another part of the draw, but it will be a great match on a hopefully great court,” says Clara Tauson to DR.

  • Ørestaden is probably Denmark’s most international place to live

In 2004, 100 citizens lived in Ørestaden of Amager. Today, almost 26,000 live in Ørestad Parish alone, Politiken reports.

Just over half of all residents in Ørestad Parish are internationals, almost equally divided between Western and non-Western immigrants and descendants.

“There are some who call Ørestad little New York,” says Susanne Billesø, who has been a teacher at Ørestad School for 11 years, to Politiken.

At Ørestad School, there are 750 children with 65 nationalities – from the Nordic countries, almost all European countries, the US, Korea, China, India, Iran, African countries, yes, states that the school management has to look up on a world map to get it placed when new children are enrolled.

The average grade at Ørestad School is higher after the 9th grade graduation exam than at other Copenhagen schools on average. And more people get a secondary education than the average in both the municipality and the rest of the country.

What most international children have in common is that the vast majority of their parents are educated, many are well-educated, and have come here as sought-after specialists or skilled workers who help Mærsk, Novo Nordisk, Nordea or other large pharmaceutical, IT or financial companies, many of which have their domiciles in Ørestad.

Household income is also higher in Ørestad than in the rest of the Municipality of Copenhagen.

“Many intrnational children are really talented. And their parents often invest significantly more in their children’s learning, they are ambitious, they want something for them. Some Danish parents could learn a little from that,” says Susanne Billesø.

  • Biggest income increases in “Novo-land”

Kalundborg is one of the municipalities where […]

  • Dutch and Belgian victory in the streets of Copenhagen

In excellent summer weather, the Copenhagen Sprint cycling race was held over the weekend.

Both for the women and the men, it ended, in a, yes, sprint. Dutch Lorena Wiebes won the women’s race, while Belgian Jordi Meeus won the men’s race.

There were thousands of spectators on both days, and the closing of the streets of Copenhagen went largely without a hitch.

“A good foundation has been laid for a really nice tradition for this race in Copenhagen and Roskilde. The most important thing was that Copenhagen welcomed it well. That support helps create a tradition. That support helps make this a fixture on the cycling calendar,” says DR Sport’s cycling expert Brian Nygaard.

From the start in Roskilde through the nine transit municipalities to the finish line in Copenhagen, there was support and joy among the many spectators.

In Copenhagen, the weekend featured a big screen, music and entertainment at the festival in Østre Anlæg at the Statens Museum for Kunst, cheering zones in Nørrebro and a folk bike race and activities on the car-free route through the city.

The national partner circle behind the race was happy afterwards.

“Once again we showed that Copenhagen is a huge cycling city. We love when the star riders sprint through our streets, and around the city there has been lots of life, good atmosphere and excitement,” says Lord Mayor of Copenhagen Lars Weiss.

Copenhagen Sprint will return for the next two years. In 2026, it will be held on June 20 and 21.
