According to Sikker Trafik and FDM, 27 motorcyclists were killed in 2019, the highest number in 10 years. The biggest proportion of cases involves solo accidents and accidents with passenger vehicles.
More than 9 out of 10 fatal cases involved a male rider while in more than 8 out of 10 fatal cases, the motorcyclist exceeded the speed limit.
Exceeding the speed limit is not only dangerous for the rider but also increases the risk that other drivers overlook the motorcyclist.
Figures not going down
Jeppe Gudmandsen, press consultant at Sikker Trafik, admitted that the number of killed and injured motorcyclists has not gone down in past years.
“The sad record of 27 motorcyclists killed in 2019 underlines that we are not at the finish line yet. It is all too often human error or outright wrong behaviour that is the reason why accidents happen,” he added.
Since 2010, 192 motorcyclists have been killed on roads. The previous dismal record was set in 2016 when 26 motorcyclists died in accidents.
Safety first
Sikker Trafik encourages motorcyclists to adhere to speed limits, always wear safety gear and even have an airbag vest in some cases.
They should also make themselves visible to other motorists by having fluorescent colours on their clothing.
Another advice is to make sure that one’s driving techniques are in order.
