An official weather warning has been issued today ahead of warm air and rain moving in across the country.

Motorists are especially warned to expect extremely slippery roads due to ‘isslag’ – a phenomenon caused when rain falls but almost instantaneously turns into ice when it hits the ground.

Following a week of sub-zero temperatures, the ground in Denmark is currently frozen, but the approaching front is much warmer. By tomorrow, temperatures will have risen to 6 or 7 degrees.

Particularly between 16:00 and 23:00
Up until 16:00 today, a mixture of snow and sleet will fall on the capital. Between 13:00 and 15:00, the precipitation could be quite heavy.

After 16:00 it will mainly be rain, and this is the point when surfaces will get slippery. The conditions will peak between 19:00 and 23:00.

The formation of ‘black ice’ will make it very hard for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to detect potentially hazardous roads and walkways.

What is isslag?
“Ice sheets are formed when water on the surface is cooled and freezes into ice, forming a layer of ice. The water therefore lies on the surface before it freezes into ice,” explains DMI.

“The only thing that is required for ice to form is water on the surface and surface temperatures that fall below 0 degrees.”
