Treasure trove of Arabic coins found on the island of Møn

30-35 Viking age coins found off the island of Møn are “genuine treasure”, says researcher

Two men with metal detectors have struck gold in the form of treasure from the Viking Age on the island of Møn.

The treasure, consisting of 30-35 coins from the Arab Caliphate, is suspected to be from around 770-880 AD – the early Viking Age.

Archaeologists from Museum Sydøstdanmark have excavated at the site since the discovery, and have also found traces of habitation from the Viking era.

The excavation is now over, and the museum is ready to report its findings and submit the coins for treatment at the National Museum.

Research director Jens Ulriksen has no doubt that the treasure is an important archaeological find.

“On a scale of 1 to 10, I would say that it is close to a 10,” he said.

“It is the first time we have found genuine treasure in the form of coins from the Arab Caliphate on Møn.”
