Select Shopping | Costumes to raise Frida’s eyebrows

Come as your favourite film or fictional character, a tart or vicar or something suitable for Halloween or Christmas. The possibilities for themed parties are endless. The trouble is what to wear? From getting the ‘in your face’ glasses and the outdated skirt to complete the look for the log lady from Twin Peaks, to finding the extra eyebrow for the Frida Kahlo look rather than growing your own, here are four great places to get inspired.

Fest og Farver

The prices are not too bad, but some of their stuff looks a bit cheap. They have loads of costumes though, so if you want a one-stop shop, this is the one. It’s also for accessories. The fake beard for your Salvador Dali impersonation, the extra eyebrow for Frida Kahlo, the black wig for your Mia Wallace, or the greasepaint for your Heath Ledger Joker tribute  – they’re all here.

Jagtvej 59, Cph N; open Mon-Thu 10:00-17:30, Fri10:00-18:00, Sat 10:00-14:00, (first and last Sat until 15:00)

Stof2000

Even though you may not be very creative or that good at making costumes, Stof2000 is a good place to roam for inspiration just in case. Four yards of green fabric later and you’re the Statue of Liberty. The quality of the fabric isn’t amazing, but it’s also pretty affordable. Anything’s better than turning up like half the party in a Spiderman costume or in an ever-so-original Scream mask.

Vintage and charity shops

It requires a bit more imagination to try charity shops – but if you invest the time, they can provide you with great inspiration or even the flourish your outfit has been looking for: from the bowler hat for the Magritte ‘Son of Man’ look to the aforementioned skirt and glasses for the Log Lady outfit. And don’t dismiss the vintage option either. TV series themes are all the range, so whether it’s Mad Men or Boardwalk Empire, vintage shops are the places to source that ‘20s dress to dance the Charleston or a ‘60s suit to sip martinis.

H&M

The basics for your outfit needn’t be too expensive. Get white trousers for 100kr for your Alex outfit from A Clockwork Orange, the short skirt you will only wear for your schoolgirl party outfit, the burlesque stockings for the 1990s revival party, and don’t forget to get a pair of acid-washed denim jackets.
