Ørestad Syd to have a Metro station by 2015

Station will give direct access to Copenhagen Arena

The under-construction Copenhagen Arena will have a new Metro station by 2015. The new Ørestad Syd station will be opened far ahead of the proposed Cityring and the newly-announced Nordhavn station. Plans for this station were part of the original plan for the Metro when it was built in the late 1990s.

Metroselskabet, the company responsible for the Metro, claimed that it will take about one and half years to complete the Ørestad Syd station.

“It will be a fantastic infrastructure if 15,000 spectators can come directly by Metro to the arena,” mayor Frank Jensen, told Berlingske newspaper.

Metroselskabet estimated that the station’s construction will cost around 100 million kroner. It’s anticipated that Ørestad Syd district will see a population boom of 10,000 people and the creation of 15,000 jobs over a period of time.

Developers By & Havn are selling property in Ørestad and say that having a convenient connection to the Metro from the start will boost sales prices. The company, which is building arena in co-operation with Copenhagen Council and Realdania, wants to ensure that people have an easy and quick access to the concerts and sports arena.

“The important thing is that the passenger base is in order and if the companies apply themselves, that can be realised,” Jensen told Berlingske. “It will also boost other urban development, which includes an ice rink”

The council has also recently unveiled a local plan for the area, which is situated in the Ørestad Syd district, south of the highway near Copenhagen Airport. The plan includes over 1,000 residences and will allocate 110,000 square metres for business developments. In addition to the arena and ice rink, there are plans for a public school with a sports hall and child care centres.

Meanwhile, Parken Stadium will have a Metro station near the Triangel in 2018 as part of the city’s ongoing infrastructure development.
