Cops charged after rowdy party

Five officers from special anti-crime unit have been charged after setting off illegal fireworks during party

Preliminary charges have been brought against five police officers from Greater Copenhagen's Vestegn district for their rowdy behaviour during a party at Rødovre police station in February.

The officers belong to a special anti-crime unit, Specialpatruljen, that is otherwise known for its successes in chasing drug dealers and gangs.

But a party to celebrate the appointment of a new leader got out of hand and illegal fireworks were thrown from the windows of the station, leading to complaints from neighbours.

Scuffles then broke out between intoxicated members of the unit and police officers who were sent to investigate the complaints.

On Wednesday, the independent police complaints commission, Det Uafhængige Politiklagemyndighed (DUP), brought the preliminary charges against the officers, who have now been assigned to different duties.

“It would be unacceptable if any of my people had done anything illegal," said chief inspector Ib Meng, who disbanded the unit the day after the party.

According to the tabloid Ekstra Bladet, the unit's leader is being charged with dereliction of duty, while four officers have been charged with abuse of power and three for breaking fireworks laws.

They are all being charged with unlawfully taking the fireworks, which had been confiscated by police.

The case has now been sent to the state prosecutor, who will decide whether to formally charge the officers.
