American singer Christina Perri, who will visit Denmark for the first time next week, works in strong girl territory, exposing her feelings and her broken and mended relationships more often the wrecked ones. Her voice has a sweet tone, complemented by her tattooed, jagged hair-cut, rocker look. Her debut album Lovestrong was released in the spring of 2011 and produced by Joe Chiccareli, who also works with the White Stripes and Tori Amos. The album was mixed by Michael Brauer, who has Coldplay and Regina Spektor to list as past credits.

“I looked at the album as a whole piece, and the two themes that stood out were love and strength,” Perri writes on her website. “It really titled itself. Writing about love is just who I am. I’ve tried to write about other things, but ultimately this is what comes out of me.”

A 25-year-old singer-songwriter from Philadelphia, Perri has been making headway in the United States for the past couple of years. Her breakthrough came in the summer of 2010 when her single ‘Jar Of Hearts’ was used in the American version of the reality dance show So You Think You Can Dance.  Overnight, the single was downloaded so many times that she made it directly onto the iTunes Top 10 pop list.

Afterwards she went on tour with James Blunt – no small feat considering the British star’s popularity in the US. And then her pop clout jumped several levels when her ballad ‘A Thousand Years’ was included on the soundtrack of a Twilight film, Breaking Dawn – Part I, one of the many vampire franchises still releasing films.

Selecting songs for the album was an easy task for Perri. “I have been writing songs since I was 15, so I reached into my arsenal and picked the ones I felt others should hear,” she said in an interview on her website. “My intention for my music is pretty simple: I want to make people feel less broken and alone.”

Opening for Perri is the young pop singer Caroline Castell, who sings mainly in Danish, but also sometimes in English. Her sound is mixed with electronic nuance and a good deal of lyrical melancholia. She played the recent Vesterbro Festival in a zebra-striped trouser suit and got noticed as an electro-pop girl with great potential.

Often her songs wrap vocals around only the most basic electronic sounds. The simple compositions leave plenty of room to focus on the texts. Her empathetic vocals deliver one clear-cut verse out after another, while her right-hand attends to the sounds and mixes.

This 18-year-old girl has already played concerts at venues like Rust, Temple, Posten and DR’s concert hall, and she is accustomed to playing to the audience the way few are at her age. Electro-pop fans in Denmark are expecting great things to come from Castell.
