Difficult to know what to make of The Spiral, an ambitious pan-European drama series about the heists of six artworks in six different cities co-ordinated by a Germanic-sounding Banksy, which will be broadcast across the continent over five episodes in September. 

Copenhagen is one of the cities, rising star Thure Lindhardt is among the Danish cast, a look at the (rather exciting) trailer suggests the filmmakers have been inspired by the Millennium Trilogy, the whole thing is in English, and it’s participative – you can search for the loot on the show’s website. But beyond that, there isn’t much else to go on. 

Also taking a continental approach is Paul Merton’s Adventures (DR2, Mon-Thu 17:55), which sees the British comic pay a visit to a number of different locations, some of which are in his home country. It’s not the first time Merton has done travel TV, and if you’re hoping he’ll adopt his panel show persona, you’ll be disappointed – he tends to be a little too polite and dull overseas. 

For something more in your face, you can’t go wrong with Gordon Ramsay, and his latest venture, Gordon Behind Bars, which takes him within the walls of Brixton Prison to teach the lags how to make fairy cakes. This is the programme Claus Meyer’s could have been (did Ramsay nick the idea?) if Danish prisons weren’t so soft. 

Elsewhere, there’s another chance to see the sixth season of Hustle (BBC Ent, Sat 21:00) and the first ever episode of Red Dwarf (BBC Ent, Thu 22:50); in Alan Carr: Chatty Man (BBC Ent, Wed 22:30) the camp comic might have met his match in Jimmy Carr; Infamous Assassinations this week revisits the death of Michael Collins (DRK, Mon 21:45); learn a few tips from Steve McQueen – The Essence of Cool (DRK, Tue 20:00); classic Ealing comedy The Lavender Hill Mob (DRK, Tue 21:30) never disappoints; talent contest The Glee Project (DRHD, Sat 14:45 & Sun 17:75) is back for another season; 24 Hours in A&E (SV2, Sun 21:50) is a new doc series set at Kings College Hospital in London, which critics describe as “profound”; and learn more about the world’s craziest driving country in India on Four Wheels (DRK, Wed 21:35).
