Museums Corner | A guide to Christmas adventures: markets, elves and winter fairytales

December is just around the corner. It’s time for elves, klejner and the scent of spruce. Museums and other exhibition venues offer a variety of Christmas experiences, whether you’re looking for family fun, Christmas presents or a place to celebrate Advent with your friends in a cosy atmosphere.

Christmas Market at Rødovregaard
Christmas begins when Rødovregaard opens its doors to anyone looking for old-fashioned stalls, treats and inspiration. In collaboration with Plantefarverne, Heerup Museum (Kirkesvinget 1, Rodovre) opens its creative Christmas Market again this year with unique artwork, crafts and ceramics. Treat yourself to Danish æbleskiver and drink a warm cup of glögg while the kids draw and write Christmas cards.

It's a kind of magic...we are Christmas elves

Elfversity
There are many different kinds of elves. There are Christmas elves, ship elves, church elves and garden elves. This year the National Museum of Denmark (Nationalmuseet, Prinsens Palæ, Frederiksholms Kanal 12, Cph K) will teach children and playful souls how to become great elves. You will get the chance to meet the elf professors, practice walking in clogs and measure your elf height. Once you’ve completed all of the challenges, you will be rewarded with an elf diploma. Entrance is free and the elf academy is open 12:00-15:00, December 9, 16, and 23.

Christmas at Hamlet’s Castle
Experience a great atmosphere and visit Kronborg Castle’s large Christmas Market in Helsingør with its rich traditions. Take a romantic walk and enjoy the peaceful Christmas mood, or see the castle from a horse-drawn carriage. Cut out Christmas decorations in the Christmas workshop or come and sing Danish Christmas songs in the castle chapel. There are lots of activities both for children and grown-ups, and the museum shop is decked out in the finest Christmas decorations. Visit the artists’ workshops and the Kronborg Galleries among the fortifications, where you will find unique Christmas gifts. The castle is open Saturday-Sunday 11:00-16:00, until Christmas Eve itself.

"A long long time ago I can still remember how Christmas used to make me smile..."Christmas the old-fashioned way
Not sure how to get into the Christmas spirit this year? Going on a journey back in time with the Open Air Museum (Frilandsmuseet, Kongevejen 100, Kongens Lyngby) will work its magic. On the first three weekends of December, the Open Air Museum revives old Christmas traditions. See how traditional Christmas meals are prepared, make Christmas decorations inspired by old patterns, listen to the daughter of the manor practice Christmas hymns on the piano in the parlour and listen to stories about Christmas that were told at the manor 100 years ago. Entrance is free and open 10:00-16:00, December 8 and 9.
