After years of debate, the City Council is finally set to begin construction of a bicycle path at one of the most dangerous intersections for cyclists in the city.

Cyclists can already enjoy bikes around the lakes that separate the downtown area from Nørrebro and Østerbro, but at the intersection of Åboulevarden and Rosenørs Allé, cyclists have been forced to dismount and pull their bikes the final metres from Peblinge Dosseringen to Åboulevarden before cycling on.

"This intersection has been a great annoyance to the thousands of cyclists that travel through town every day. We will also cater to the numerous joggers and pedestrians who use the lakes as a recreational area every day,” the deputy mayor for technical and environmental affairs, Ayfer Baykal (Socialistisk Folkeparti), told Politiken newspaper.

Pending final approval by the City Council on March 14, the junction will receive two-way bicycle paths across both Åboulevarden and Rosenørs Allé. They will be connected to the cycle paths along both roads and to Svineryggen, the path that runs along Sankt Jørgens Lake.

The construction will mean that the right turn for cars from Åboulevarden turning down Rosenørs Allé will be axed, as will two bus stops by Vodroffsvej.

The council has allocated about four million kroner for the project and construction is expected to commence sometime in July this year.
